What does the Qur'an say about responding to evil with good?

The Qur'an gives one of its most transformative instructions for dealing with people who wrong you: don't match their evil — answer it with something better, and watch an enemy soften into a close friend.

“And not equal are the good deed and the bad deed. Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better; and thereupon the one whom between you and him is enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend.”— 41:34 (Saheeh International)
