How do I pray Tahajjud (the night prayer)?

Tahajjud is the voluntary prayer of the depth of the night, prayed after waking from sleep. The Qur'an ties it to a special honor — that Allah may raise the one who prays it to a praised station. It is the quiet time when duas feel closest to being heard.

“And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will raise you to a praised station.”— 17:79 (Saheeh International)
